OUR APRIL 2008 BUSINESS MEETING
As usual, SABS meet along with the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) at our annual meeting in Spartanburg, South Carolina on April 18, 2008. Several important announcements were made at the meeting.
AWARDS
Richard and Minnie Windler Award - A check for $500 was presented for the best systematics paper published within the pages of Castanea during 2007.
The winners were Aaron Kennedy and Gary L. Walker (both of Appalachian State University) for their article: "The population genetic structure of the Showy Lady's-Slipper Orchid (Cypripedium reginae Walter) in its glaciated and unglaciated ranges." It was published in Castanea 72 (4): 248-261.
Earl Core Student Research Awards - Four awards were presented to assist students with their research projects.
Juan Carlos Villarreral, University of Connecticut - $300

Population genetics and evolutionary implications of the loss of sexual reproduction in the Southern Appalachian hornwort Megaceros aenigmaticus.
Alexandra Kay, Elon University - $300
Student of Dr. David Vandermast
The effect of wild boar (Sus scrofa) rooting on plant biodiveristy in high-elevation beech forests of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Louis Mansfield, Valdosta State University - $300
Student of Dr. John Pascarella
Genetic vs. environmental control of flowering time in two sympartic Gelsemium species.
Michael W. Denslow, Appalachian State Univiersity - $200
Student of Dr. Zack E. Murrell
Spatial patterns, survey gaps and site selection bias in North Carolina floristics studies.
Elizabeth Ann Bartholomew Award- Presented for outstanding service to SABS and/or botany.
The recipient of the 2008 award is Michael Baranski of Catawba College. A summary of his many accomplishments will be published in the September issue of Castanea.
ELECTION RESULTS
Due to problems and delays with getting the Chinquapin out, there was no report of results from the election. The ballot deadline has been extended until May 15, 2008.
